For quite some time, graphics cards have been obsolete for mining Bitcoin (BTC), and ASICs are the only option to have any chance of profit. It seems that Ethereum (ETH) will share the same fate with Bitcoin in the near future, since it’s becoming increasingly difficult to mine it with conventional GPUs. However, mining cryptocurrencies with GPUs will still remain relevant for years to come, as new coins such as Cardano (ADA), Conflux (CFX), Ravencoin (RVN), and Ergo (ERG) are emerging and starting to grow in popularity.
Ergo in particular seems to be one of the shining stars of a new generation of cryptocurrencies. There are several reasons for that. Ergo was founded by Alex Chepurnoy, the same man who contributed to the development of Cardano and who founded smartcontact.com (now known as Chainlink). The Ergo platform aims to build advanced cryptocurrency features and radically new DeFi functionality on the robust and stable foundations in order to provide financial contracts in an efficient and secure way.
In a way, Ergo is very much akin to the early Bitcoin, but in many ways it brings improvements to the areas in which Bitcoin lacked. First of all, Ergo is based on Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism, and is ASIC-resistant just like Ethereum due to memory requirements. This makes Ergo extremely suitable for mining with GPUs. Secondly, Ergo’s contracts are built on Sigma protocols which introduce privacy functionalities to the script at a much deeper level then Ethereum or Cardano. Thirdly, Ergo incorporates NIPoPoW (Non-Interactive Proofs of Proof of Work) mechanism which frees its clients from downloading the whole chain to interact with the network, thus bringing a huge step forward in terms of security and decentralization.
However, probably the most important feature of Ergo is that it’s fully compatible with Cardano’s ecosystem, and is bringing all the advantages of its Proof of Work system to users of Cardano network. Unlike Cardano, which can’t be mined (since it’s based on Proof of Stake mechanism), Ergo can be mined, and is fully interoperable with Cardano through its Extended UTXO (eUTxO) accounting model. This means that Ergo will provide oracle pools for Cardano, and will post information from its own pools onto the Cardano blockchain. Overall, Ergo aims to revolutionize and upgrade existing blockchain technologies, and as such has the potential to find real-world applications in finance, personal identity security, supply chain logistics monitoring, real-time IoT operating systems, etc.
Since its market cap is still quite low (compared to other major cryptocurrencies), mining Ergo is still quite easy, and minimum payouts can be reached fairly quickly, which is perfect if you are a casual miner with a single graphics card. The Autolykos algorithm for mining Ergo is also much more energy efficient than the Ethereum’s Daggerhashimoto algorithm, so you can expect much less wear and tear on your GPU if you plan to start mining Ergo. Even this LHR variant from EVGA is perfectly suited for mining Ergo, since its built-in cryptocurrency mining limiter only limits its mining performance while hashing out Ethereum. With proper settings, this card can deliver up to 112 MH/s hashrate on Autolykos algorithm while consuming only 110 W of power, which makes it one of the most energy efficient cards on the market for mining Ergo.
But besides offering great mining performance, and quick ROI, the GeForce RTX 3060 is also very well-suited for 1080p and 1440p gaming on ultra settings, as well as for video encoding, 3D rendering and entry-level machine learning thanks to its additional RT and Tensor cores. This particular variant from EVGA comes with a 6% higher boost clock, but features no RGB lighting and only two fans, however, it runs quiet and cool, and if you lower its power limit with the MSI Afterburner, you won’t even notice it running in you computer case.

In case you don’t care about power consumption or affordability, and just want to achieve the highest possible hashrate while mining Ergo, then consider purchasing the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. With a whooping 10240 CUDA cores and 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM, this bad boy can deliver up to 260 MH/s hashrate on Autolykos algorithm with a power consumption of 280 W. This means that the RTX 3080 Ti can deliver roughly 0.93 kH per watt, which is slightly below the RTX 3060’s efficiency levels, but will allow you to reach your minimum payout threshold much quicker due to its incredibly high hashrate.
The reason why we recommend getting this particular variant of the RTX 3080 Ti from ZOTAC is the fact that this is one of the least expensive custom models of the RTX 3080 Ti currently available on the market. The card features a triple-fan cooling system, has RGB lighting, and sports a 2.7% higher boost clock compared to the reference model. Unsurprisingly, the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is a true champion of mining Ergo, given the fact how energy efficient this graphics card is. Even the LHR variant (which is only unsuitable for mining Ethereum) can deliver up to 155 MH/s hashrate on Autolykos algorithm, with a power consumption of 130 W. This means that the RTX 3060 Ti can hash out almost 1.2 kH per watt, which makes it absolutely the best card for mining Ergo.
Unfortunately, it’s extremely difficult to find and purchase the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, partly because of very high demand, partly because of limited supply. In our opinion, the MSI RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 2X OC is the best custom variant of the RTX 3060 Ti, since it features top-notch cooling system, great acoustics, and high-quality PCB components. Ever since it was first released in 2017, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 was and odd graphics card. Its gaming performance was quite inconsistent and oftentimes disappointing, but its compute capabilities were pretty extraordinary. When it comes to mining Ergo, the same thing could be said. The Vega 64 is an incredibly good GPU for mining Ergo, since it can deliver 160 MH/s hashrate with a power consumption of 180 watts, and if you tweak it a bit, you can expect to achieve even better performance. Great thing about Vega 64 is that this card is also suitable for mining Ethereum and other altcoins, so if you get fed up with Ergo, you can easily switch to mining other coins.
Traditionally, Sapphire has been known for producing the best custom designed AIB variants of AMD’s Radeon cards, which is why we recommend getting this NITRO+ LE model if you decide to mine Ergo with Vega 64. The card features 4.2% higher boost clock than the reference model, and it comes with three 8-pin connectors, overkill triple-fan cooling solution, and top-of-the-line PCB components. Unfortunately the card is quite big and heavy, and it sucks for gaming, but if you are a serious crypto miner, then these drawbacks shouldn’t bother you at all.

Although not as efficient as the GeForce RTX 3060 when it comes to mining Ergo, the new Radeon RX 6600 XT is a very environmentally friendly GPU for mining cryptocurrencies. The RX 6600 XT can deliver 62 MH/s on Autolykos algorithm with a power consumption of only 80 W, which means it has a mining efficiency of 0.77 kH per watt. The RX 6600 XT can also secure you up to 32.5 Mh/s on Ethash algorithm with same power draw, which means it’s also perfect for mining Ethereum.
Since Radeon RX 6600 XT is a brand new graphics card, there are still a very few AIB variants of the card available on the market for purchase. The Sapphire Pulse RX 6600 XT is one of those few models which, besides it relatively affordable price, also features very good build quality. The card comes with no additional performance uplifts (features the same boost clock as the reference model), but can boast with efficient cooling solution, and reliable VRM design. Unfortunately, the RX 6600 XT costs more than the RTX 3060, but given the fact that it has no cryptocurrency mining limiter, the card is well worth buying if you plan to solely use it for mining.

The GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER is far from perfect when it comes to mining Ergo. The card can deliver around 51 MH/s hashrate on Autolykos algorithm while consuming 90 watts of power which, to be fair, isn’t very efficient. Despite that, this is still a nice entry-level Ergo mining card, which can also profitably mine Ethereum. The GTX 1660 SUPER’s main advantage over other cards listed here is that it’s fairly inexpensive, and can easily be obtained. Plus, it is still a pretty decent card for 1080p gaming on high settings.
There are many AIB variants of the GTX 1660 SUPER, however, we like the most this one from Gigabyte. The Gigabyte GTX 1660 SUPER OC comes with a slightly increased boost core clock, and features a Windforce 2X cooling system with two alternate spinning fans. The card has no RGB elements, but runs quiet and cool, and is very easy to install thanks to its compact size. Overall, this is a decent and robust card that won’t break your bank, and will allow you to start earning some money by mining Ergo.
